Photogravure, an alternative photographic printing technique

Photogravure

  • Photogravure is a fascinating craft, one of the earliest and still most beautiful ways of transferring a photograph onto paper.

This old intaglio printing process from the 19th century, combined with modern technology, opens up new possibilities for creating unique works of art.

The light-sensitive photopolymer plate is printed with the motif to be printed using the piezography process, exposed, washed and hardened. It is now ready for the application and wiping of the printing ink. The moistened, age-resistant handmade paper and the inked printing plate are now fed through the rollers on the press. Due to the high pressure, the paper fibers are pressed into the indentations of the plate and thus absorb the printing ink. This produces prints with the incredible detail of a photograph and the quality of a print. In addition to photographs, drawings, graphics or images of any technique can also be printed on top of each other in several passes. The technique also allows different printmaking elements and infinite color tones to be mixed and combined, enabling artists to create multi-layered works that blur the boundaries between photography and printmaking.
