Gelatine Silver Prints
Gelatine silver prints on baryta fiber based paper are characterized by an extensive tonal range, a silky, shimmering surface and long durability.
The paper consists of a cotton base, a layer of barium sulfate and the light-sensitive silver gelatin layer. The barium sulfate or baryta layer stops the photographic layer from sinking into the surface of the base paper.
Under the enlarger in the darkroom, the paper is exposed. Each image has its own exposure time, areas that are too bright can be re-exposed, areas that are too dark can be dimmed – in this sense, «analog image processing» is always part of the image expression. The exposed print is developed, watered, air-dried and pressed, and then retouched by hand with a brush.
Since this process is costly, it is used less and less today. However, museums, galleries, art lovers and artists still appreciate hand made fiber prints. This process is and remains one of the most beautiful black and white printing techniques.
On request, we also produce prints on RC paper. These papers are coated with a plastic layer on both sides to reduce processing time, which results in low durability.
